The NauticalInstitute has introduced an alternative route to certificate revalidationthrough the implementation of a DPVM Revalidation Course. This course may alsobe undertaken at any time by candidates who wish to refresh and update theirknowledge. The requirements governing the delivery and conduct of the DPVMRevalidation Course are set out in this document.
The contents ofthe former DPVM Revalidation Course and the DPVM Refresher and CompetencyAssessment Course were substantially similar. Following review, The NauticalInstitute has decided to merge these two into a single course. The unifiedcourse is called the DPVM Revalidation Course.
This manualprovides comprehensive guidance for instructors delivering the NauticalInstitute DPVM Revalidation Course for Key Technical DP Personnel.
Course Aims
To give thestudent the following:
1. An updatedunderstanding of the theoretical and practical operation of DP systems
2. Technicalunderstanding of the component parts of the DP and associated systems
3. An understandingof the limitations of equipment and the effects of equipment failures
4. An understandingof the limitations and the effects of incorrect operation of the systems
5. An understandingof work that can safely be undertaken with and without the help of equipmentmanufacturers and, more importantly, when to stop before affecting the vessel'scapability to perform DP operations or redundancy
6. The ability tofind faults in the DP system and its base components
7. An understandingof Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and the philosophy of systemredundancy
8. An improvedability to operate the engine room and DP equipment in a safe and competentmanner
9. An understandingof MTS vessel design philosophy and MTS fundamentals
10.An understandingof cross-connections and their effect on redundancy
11.Updated DPknowledge and vessel-specific and type-specific onboard equipment training
